Main Scientific Areas of Research

  • The main activity of António Pereira Gonçalves has been the study of intermetallic compounds with d and f elements (including uranium and thorium). This work involves the prediction, synthesis, and characterization of new intermetallic compounds. Intermetallic compounds with d and f elements can show unusual magnetic and electrical transport properties, like supermagnetism, heavy fermion behavior or superconductivity. The motivation of this work is to establish relationships between the structural aspects and the physical properties, by a systematic study of this type of materials to provide the adequate data. The preparation know-how has also been used to develop uranium targets for RIBs. Recently he has been strongly involved on the study of new, high-performance, thermoelectric materials.
  • He is responsible for the High Temperature Synthesis and Crystal Growth and for the Films Deposition Laboratories.
